Suites arithmétiques

Une suite $(u_n)$ est dite arithmétique s'il existe un nombre $b$ tel que pour tout $n\in\mathbb N$ : $u_{n+1}=u_n+b $.


$b$ est appelé la raison de la suite.


En calculant de proche en proche les premiers termes, on a

  • $u_1=u_0+b $
  • $u_2=u_1+b=u_0+b+b=u_0+2b $
  • $u_3=u_2+b=u_0+3b$
  • $u_4=u_3+b=u_0+4b$
  • et ainsi de suite


En fait, nous avons la propriété suivante


Propriété 1. 

Soit $(u_n)$ une arithmétique de raison $b$.

Pour tout $n\in\mathbb N$, on a $u_n=u_0+bn$.


Démonstration. Nous allons montrer par récurrence que pour tout entier naturel $n$ :

$$(\mathcal P_n)\ \ : \ \ u_n=u_0+nb $$

(1) Initialisation. $u_0=u_0+0b$ donc $(\mathcal P_0)$

(2) Hérédité. Supposons $(\mathcal P_n)\ \ : \ \ u_n=u_0+nb $ pour un certain entier naturel $n$.


Nous avons $u_{n+1}=u_n+b$ donc d'après l'hypothèse de récurrence $(\mathcal P_n)$, nous avons $$u_{n+1}=u_0+nb+b=u_0+(n+1)b$$


Cette dernière égalité étant $(\mathcal P_{n+1})$, nous avons donc pour tout entier naturel $n$ l'implication $$(\mathcal P_n)\Rightarrow (\mathcal P_{n+1})$. Autrement dit la suite de propriété $(\mathcal P_n)$ est héréditaire.


(3) Conclusion. Par initialisation et hérédité, la propriété est démontrée.


Propriété 2. Soit $(u_n)$ une arithmétique de raison $b$.

Pour tout $n\in\mathbb N$, on a :

$$u_0+u_1+\ldots+u_{n-1}+u_n=\frac{(u_0+u_n)(n+1)}{2} $$


Démonstration. 

On va utiliser l'astuce attribuée au mathématicien Gauss agé de 5 ans. 


On note $S=$u_0+u_1+\ldots+u_{n-1}+u_n$.

On va calculer $S+S$ en arrangeant les termes des deux sommes identiques comme ci-dessous : 

$$\begin{array}{cccccccc} S=&u_0&+u_1&+u_2&+\ldots\ldots&+u_{n-2}&+u_{n-1}&+u_n\\ S=&u_n&+u_{n-1}&+u_{n-2}&+\ldots\ldots&+u_{2}&+u_{1}&+u_0\\\hline 2S=&(u_0+u_n)&+(u_0+u_n)&+(u_0+u_n)&+\ldots\ldots&+(u_0+u_n)&+(u_0+u_n)&+(u_0+u_n)\end{array}$$


En effet, faisant les sommes par colonnnes, on obtient toujours $u_0+u_n $:

  • $u_1+u_{n-1}=u_0+b+u_n-b=u_0+u_n$
  • $u_2+u_{n-2}=u_1+b+u_1-b=u_1+u_{n-1}$
  • etc.


En fait pour tout entier $k$ compris entre $0$ et $n$, nous avons : $u_k+u_{n-k}=u_0+u_n $. Ce résultat est laissé au lecteur en exercice (les commentaires sont faits pour ça!).


Finalement, on a 

$$2S=\underbrace{(u_0+u_n)+\ldots+(u_0+u_n)}_{(n+1)\ \mathrm{ termes}}$$

Ainsi $$S=\frac{(n+1)(u_0+u_n)}{2} $$


Application.  $1+2+\ldots+n=\frac{n(n+1)}{2}$.


En effet, si on considère la suite $(u_n)$ donnée pour tout entier naturel $n$ par $u_n=n$, qui est de raison 1, et de terme initial $u_0=0$, nous avons 

$$1+2+\ldots+n=u_0+u_1+\ldots+u_n=\frac{(n+1)(u_0+u_n)}{2}=\frac{(n+1)n}{2}  $$
